Default Double clutching... the *lazy* way!

Hi everybody,

I have a question. I know that when downshifting while braking, it's good form to heel-toe and blip the throttle. This is pretty hard in the Yaris... I only had one pair of shoes I could do this comfortably in.

But if I'm just decelerating, say going from 4th to 2nd as I roll up to a red light (i.e. not braking), can I blip the throttle with the clutch in? I know proper truck-driving technique is to go into neutral, clutch out + throttle, then down to the next gear. I'm just wondering if it's hard on the synchros or anything to just blip it with the clutch in.

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

no, rev matching is not bad on the transmission, in fact it's good for it.

why is the yaris hard to heel/toe? i've heel-toed several yarii with no issues (and i have size 8 feet lol)

Ok... and it's fine for the clutch then too?

Yeah, but you're a driving MASTER! I got size 12 feet... dunno if that makes it harder or easier. I just find the angle really weird. And I can only do it in really really small (tight) shoes... like those "ballerina-style" Puma shoes.

are you trying to use your heel and toe to make this happen? it's really more a case of using the ball of your foot on the extreme right edge of the brake pedal, and extending your little toe outward to catch the gas pedal. when i heel-toe, i push the heel of my shoe as far to the right as possible, swiveling on the brake pedal with the "ball" of my foot.

i'll try to draw it

oh, and no, not hard on the clutch at all. any transition that lessens slip in the clutch is a good thing

crap, my drawing is flawed. should say "right" not "left"

i'll fix it

Some people have had difficulty with heel-toe in the Yaris because the gas pedal is a little "lower" than the other two.

John Kuchta, took the pads off the clutch and brake, and put grip tape on there instead. This made the relative heights of the pedals easier for heel-toe shifting.

^ +1 It's a super cheap mod:

$4 in all and it certainly helps.

definitely works.. since it's not a "real" pedal, could a bracket be built to shift the gas pedal closer to the brake?
